A reflection and documentation of what I have done after the meeting with Lynda on
14 January Monday
I dig deeper into my motivation of writing this dissertation. My past frustrating experience with technology art, curiosity to the meaning of art and also seeing festival as an activism that will bring some transformation and reverberate a new culture and identity.
15 January Tuesday
And start to write a blog - “I like people not art and machine”, in an attempt to find the question I want to ask. I was angry about art being regulated and have to fit into the purpose of commerce. But then again, maybe good art or bad art are best judged by if it can serve its purposes. (http://peoplenotartandmachine.blogspot.com/2008/01/words-are-not-big-enough.html)

cultural debate: revisiting modernity
realize modern is never a fix stated or an ideology. It is what is happening now. And we have been trying to grasb what is the essence of the time happening now.
The book – we have never been born modern. Sees modernity as a state of perfection never worked out and we are still experimenting with rationality, science, possibility of equality, universality, democracy…
17 January Thursday
dissertation workshop: sharing your ideas with classmates. My dissertation covers two topics. And they are…
Topic one: Frustration of contemporary art world
Topic two: Frustration of technology
a day of mad research in the periodical section of LCC library:
Afterall, a article on contemporary art as a story told by jaff wall- important 60s, artists went into education, social services etc…
Another article on Curational practice by Peter Osborn.
Cultural trends, an article on art policy, museum business
Cultural studies, I’m interested by an article that use auto-ethnography style of writing her own ethnical experience. It is called Violence UNSEEN.
Theory culture & society, critical sociologist, Marx, technology, Maurizio Lazzarato.
Hyper Media and Multimedia, crazy tech invention and use of media
New media and technology, network relationships.
My note: I found critical writing on technology is interesting. But new tech invention and education are boring. It seems like the world of technology belongs to the boys, also the place for invention belongs to the boys too. When woman are in the room, we seems to be at a wrong place. But at same time be seemed with curiosity and fascination. Some techno woman have a androgynous quality, or say, lack of femininity. I meet some woman who learn computer stuff on their own. Probably the teaching material is easily accessible. There is more freedom for people to grasp the information, but not necessary a good environment for people of different personality to grow, develope and nurture themselves. There are many woman do well with hardware and software and are focused. But their ability is rarely recognized. Maybe technology art just another work and job they can do.
I think the formation of individual’s gender when they go into the technological world and also how the technological culture creates different gender position are interesting relation to look at.
18 January Friday
19 January Saturday
I was suppose to go to the Art and Immaterial Labour conference in tate Britain. But the place is sold out. I learnt more about this Italian political activist called Antonial Nigre who co wrote the book about globalisation- Multitude.
I went to the Chelsea library and read some interesting books:
Mute, Vol 2 # 6 Culture and Politics After The Net, Art market: a boom without end? Liquidity, critique and the art market by Suhail Malik
Feminist Review: 87 Italian Feminisms
Digital creativity, very boring magazine
Framework N.7 June 07, Nordic Nationality in Context
Flash Art, a contemporary art magazine
I went to sing Karaoke in lucky voice at night for Rebecca’s birthday. I don’t know how to use the song ordering machine. At the end of the 2 hour session, we spend 200 pound… and before the Karaoke, I olderd fancy creamy and burry cocktail in soho theatre bar also take away snack that worth 30 pound or something.
20 January Sunday
I visited sherry. Victor and I made a compost together in the garden. We take the rocks out of the garden and planted some tulips. Nicole said she is studying in goldsmith to be a art administrator. There are some Chinese, Taiwanese woman in her class that also study curation. I would like to make friend with them.
I start to went into study of art theory
Joe invited me to david’s house party in bow. I was very rude to a techno girl at some point. At night I meet up with elisha, anna and Sandra in gorge and dragon.
21 January Monday -----this week I have a very slow process on dissertation research
cultural policy course. Am I going to learn more about the Art Business?
Strange contemporary art world…
David Hesmondhalph, The cultural industries
22 January Tuesday
I done more research online on Frieze Art Fair and had think through the value/purpose of art. And find Lynda’s essay about the film Piano on Internet, it includes- ethnicity, femininity, class, film studies, colonialism.
Elisha and anna have a drag king performance in bar wotever. Meet up with ama and that is the last time I saw her.
23 January Wednesday
cultural debate, crazy activism stuff. Melanie Gilligan: risk http://www.metamute.org/en/Re-distributing-the-Re-distribution-of-the-Sensible in contemporary art (how the hell this book come into my reading list?)After work at 7pm, I got very lonely, I went to sainboury to get some toilet paper and I found a book Art Theories for Beginners in a small waterstone on oxford street. I stay until the book shop is closed at 9. I bought that book and went to another bigger waterstone that open until 10, I found the exhibition catalogue of Frieze art Fair.
24 January Thusday
had a dissertation workshop with Lesley. She gave us some criteria on how to assess a dissertation, which I found quite useful.
I am very absorbed in reading Art Theories for Beginners,
There are some art theories I would like include in my dissertation. A reading list grow from this book will later on be summarized.
25 January Friday
Stay home all morning to read, go to camberwel college to check email and Frieze Art info. And went to barbican gallery for sex and seduction exhibition. I found it difficult to accept that so many artwork about sex are displayed out of its context in a serious manner and the sex-art become the uber attraction. Losing the tenderness of meaning and brutality of the society which try to suppress them.

The words are not BIG ENOUGH
"The words are not BIG ENOUGH!" my dad yelled to me. I stood on the ladder, with a big brush in hand. I was writting "Food Drink" in chinese charators. my dad eager to advertise our small sandwitch shop to all the passing neighbours but he has very little budget. My mom is making the food everyday. she think the best way to run the shop is to make good quality food and people will tell others about our shop. so the chef of ourshop is actually not so bothered with advertising. she think the word of mouth will be fine for the businese.
but it is too long a process for my dad. world of mouth? no, better to have giant sound systems.
but hey, we don't have a sound system what should we do? my dad will sit back against us in agony.
he want to cover the shop with writings that tells everybody what we do. but soon menu fill up the wall and there was no enough space for more words. and my dad was still not satisfied. "The words are not big enough, nobody can see!" he yelled to me and kicked my paint brushes and woodboard away.
****
I took a walk on the street and I saw everywhere is big advert billboard with words and pictures screaming at me. They are screaming "I want money, I need to survive!" thats fantastic, not only my dad has that impusive mentality for big words. Alot of people in taiwan do. "deep in the water, hot in the fire." is the phrase often used to describe ordinary taiwanese people in the media. but, the situation in taiwan could not be that bad. is it a reactionist attitute? me have that attitude and pass year after years. I am feed properly, what shall i complain?
advertise board scream at me again "I want money, I need to survive!" ok, thats annoying. my dad kick the paint brushes and yelled at me "shit fuck your mom's pussy " again, ok, what's wrong what's wrong? I escaped.
what is my activism? how would like to see the world to be? big questions.
-------------
The las time i see my dad was in september last year. that was when the story of the sandwich shop happen. but the story of billboard in taiwan still goes on.

my dissertation outline won't work.
I hate technology. I hate the fact that i depend on it so much. (then why you want to write it?)
I like to be able to remember the lyric of a song, to remember the movement of yoga, to remember the steps of a dance.
i hate internet, i can never find the stuff i want on the internet. I can't find the stuff i want to know in the wikipeida. i just got lost.
new media art are boring and difficult to make. (it is sad because the data in it is stuff that people are not bothered to remember) probably when i go back to taiwan i am going to protest in front of the memory stick factory and accuse them of letting us to forget and to escape.
apparently Lynda, a very warm, big australian woman who is my dissertation superviser, like her kid to play with paper mache.(instead of playing with computer game and equipments that are expensive and sometime not very creative at all.)I like art that is simple, recyclable, organic as well.
but the fact is that I live in a society which creates alot of technology, and it need people to use them, it provides jobs and it need ideas.
art is something that everybody can afford to do? no. I want to do art, how can i sustain myself then?
while in the first world the economy of creative industry prospers, in my world the creativity is not a economy yet. and i am not sure if it ever should be.
I went to a tutorial with Lynda yesterday.
there are some problems with my dissertation plans she said:
1. my dissertation plan don't have a focus.
2. it is impossible to answer the question i set up -Is New
Media Art a subject of technological capitalism, Or is
New Media Art a chance for renovating a more
democratic, positive society?
to answer her criticism. yes, maybe i don't have a focus. and i often trap in binary thinking of good and evil.

a museum in taiwan
let me tell you... i use to went to this museum as a kid. so when i see the colour and lines in a painting, i concentrate all my imagination and play in it. i talk with the painting too, in a way that no adult will understand. it is the freedom of imagination to a painting in a museum that make me feel so uplifted. maybe you will say going to a museum is not as fun as going to the nature or playing in the park. I don't like to go to the nature because there is always parents to try put protection or restrictions (and there are always alot and alot of preparation for them to do before going out...), I didn't really enjoy playing in a park with strangely painted horse either. the repetitive motion of swing or sliding down once and once again just bored me. Or maybe also because i was a very, very self-fish kid. as my aunt told me, I use to dominate a octopus shaped slide with 4 stairs and 4 slides all for the use of my own. maybe it was not fun for me to play in the park because i didn't know how to share with other kids.
but anyways, my family bring me to museum some times, they always need to tell me to "hurry up! come on we need to go." I like museums, there was a sense of satisfaction i got from museum visiting as a kid.
but i think that museums in taiwan had changed, it became so dull.
the abstraction, questioning, foreign influences dominate the museum. You will know what i mean when you see the exhibition now. there is no good work in there that i can indulge anymore. there is no stories to tell from it. shit contemporary art! it is not fun to go to museums.
today I went to the taichung museum website, there was a exhibition in 2005 called, climate: ARS electronica...
yes, i know why taiwan museum want to exhibit Ars eletronica so badly. because the festival is an inspiration. for a capitalist society. creates more gimmit, creates more cool stuff, creates more shit for us to consume.
we don't need this technology crap... the website of 2005 climate exhibition is full of shit! it is like a business catagoue.http://climax.digiarts.org.tw/ it is like a show case of something such as CARS.. (if it is a show case of cars or boats in a museum, and the show is an attempts to sell the products i will think the curator is going mad. )
ok , enough of mumbling.
i found out that there is another smaller venue next to the museum that actually organise workshops and discussion to learn and share and criticise..
http://digiark.ntmofa.gov.tw/main.htm
so thats better.
let me see how the research goes. there are simple distinctions of like and dislike. but the distinction shifts between contexts. all i want to do here is TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IS GOING ON... to be able to do that, it involves studying into politics, into economics, so i can know what is going on with the technology art hype culture in taiwan. unfortunately writing a dissertation is more than just like or dislike.
and I, have some political standing of my own as well. I want to understand.... to know people, to learn stories. warm up. to know what is right and what is wrong, to know the situations. for activism, for a future. basics things, good things to know, that what i want to learn and write in here. I believe some time you will find it interesting too.
My dissertation outline:
Dissertation outline:
Chapter 1: Introduction- the context of ARS
Electronica
this chapter will include the histroy of ARS
Electronica, its objectives, the structure of the
institution.
Chapter 2: The working of ARS Electronica
this chapter will include some interview of people who
are involved in making New Media Art and ARS
electronica. And an analyse of ARS Electronica's links
to government and private cooperations.
Chapter 3: Does New Media Art exist?
To explore the relationships between art and
technology in contemporary society is the fundamental
theme in ARS Electronica. I set a question-- Is New
Media Art a subject of technological capitalism, Or is
New Media Art a chance for renovating a more
democratic, positive society?
Chapter 4: Case study: 2007 ARS Electronica theme:
GOODBYE PRIVACY
Chapter 5: Conclusion
